"Samson Ratshilumela Mudzunga was born in 1938 in the former homeland of Venda where he still lives. Although Mudzunga began playing with clay as a child, it wasn't until much later in life that he became a self-sustaining artist, acclaimed for performance events and extraordinary wood carvings such as his enormous coffin drums. Although based primarily in the Northern Province, Mudzunga uses Johannesburg as his urban base. The texts in the book interrogate the artist's work from these two geographical perspectives, while his elusive and fascinating performances are extensively documented with black and white images."
